I can create the array in the bios no problem, but the drivers I got from AMD (bottom,top,config) do not work. With the Crosshair VII all i had to do was Create the array in the bios, make sure raid was turned on. And during windows install, use the bottom driver, top driver then config. Windows would see the array as one big drive. It dosn't seem to be working. If so best solution for you is setting up RAID 0 with multiple SSDs. So here is the step by step guide how to setup 'RAID 0' with two SSDs. Backup all the data in your computer and you might need to reinstall the OS. After setting the RAID all of the data in SSD will lost. So if you need the data in SSDs please backup all of those. Summary

A striped volume (RAID 0) combines areas of free space from multiple hard disks (anywhere from 2 to 32) into one logical volume. Data that is written to a striped volume is interleaved to all disks at the same time instead of sequentially. Therefore, disk performance is the fastest on a RAID 0 volume as compared to any other type of disk configuration. Administrators prefer to use striped volumes when input/output (I/O) speed is important. Any file system, including FAT, FAT32, or NTFS, can be used on a striped volume.

Requirements

  • There must be at least two hard disk drives. IDE, small computer system interface (SCSI), or mixed architecture is permissible.
  • All disks involved in the striped volume must be dynamic disks.
  • Each portion of the free space must be exactly the same (for example, the size and file system type).

How to set up the Disk Management system

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.

  2. Expand the Storage node.

  3. Click Disk Management.

  4. On the View menu, point to Top, and then click Disk List.

    In the right pane, a column appears that lists the attributes of each disk in the system.

  5. On the View menu, point to Bottom, and then click Graphical View.

The Disk Description pane (which is displayed in gray) is positioned on the left side of the volume description, which is displayed in color. The disk description contains information about each disk's disk number, whether it's a basic or dynamic configuration, its size, and its status (online or offline).

The volume descriptions are color-coded. They hold information about each volume, such as the drive letter (if assigned), whether the volume is allocated or unallocated, the partition or volume size, and the health status of the volume.

Requirements to make sure that disks are set up to support a striped volume

  • Disks: A minimum of two disks are needed to support striping.
  • Type: Any disks involved in striping must be dynamic. Conversion from basic to dynamic goes very quickly without data loss. After you complete the conversion procedure, you must restart the computer.
  • Capacity: The striped volume can take the whole disk or as little as 50 megabytes (MB) for each disk.
  • Unallocated space: Any disks that you want to upgrade to a dynamic disk must contain at least 1 MB of free space at the end of the disk for the upgrade to succeed. Disk Management automatically reserves this free space when it creates partitions or volumes on a disk, but disks with partitions or volumes that are created by other operating systems may not have this free space available.
  • Status: The status of all disks involved in a striped volume must be online when you create the striped volume.
  • Device Type: You can install striping on any dynamic disk even if there are mixed drive architectures on the system. For example, IDE, Enhanced IDE (EIDE), and SCSI drives can all be used in one striped volume.

How to upgrade to dynamic disks

If the disks that are going to be involved in the striped volume are already dynamic disks, proceed to the 'How to Convert to Striped Volume' section of this article.

Note

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

To upgrade a basic disk to a dynamic disk:

  1. Before you upgrade disks, quit any programs that are running on those disks.
  2. Right-click the gray Disk Description pane that is located to the left of the color-coded volume panes, and then click Upgrade to Dynamic Disk.
  3. If the second disk isn't a dynamic disk, follow steps 1 and 2 to upgrade it to a dynamic disk.

How to convert to striped volume

In this scenario, there are two disks on the computer, Disk 0 and Disk 1. Both disks are dynamic disks and have at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of free unallocated space on each disk for a total volume of 2 GB.

  1. In the lower-right pane of the Disk Management tool, right-click the free, unallocated volume space on either disk, and then click Create Volume.

  2. After the Create Volume Wizard starts, click Next.

  3. Under Volume Type, click Striped Volume > Next.

  4. In the left pane under Select Two or More Disks, a list is displayed that contains all disks that have enough free, unallocated space to participate in the striped volume.

    In the right pane under Selected, the disk that you right-clicked in step 1 is displayed.

  5. In the left pane under All Available Dynamic Disks, click the disk, and then click Add.

    All disks that are displayed in the right pane are labeled Selected. View the bottom of the Select Disk dialog box under the Size label. The For All Selected Disks box displays the maximum size of the striped volume that you can make.

    Note

    The volume on each disk is the same size in the completed striped volume. For example, if you have 100 MB on the first disk, you have 100 MB on the second disk. Therefore, the total size of your combined volumes is double that of the smaller of the volumes on the two disks.

    You can reduce the size of the volume by modifying the value in the Disk Size box. Keep in mind that on a system that has two disks, the total striped volume size is double the size that you enter. The Total Volume Size box under the right pane displays the actual size of the striped volume.

  6. Click Next to advance to the Assign Drive Letter Path page of the wizard.

  7. At this time, you may want to assign a drive letter to your striped volume (you can also do this at any other time). To do so, click Assign Drive Letter, and then enter an available drive letter.

    Alternatively, you can click Do not assign drive letter or path. You can also click Mount this volume on an empty folder that supports drive paths. However, this selection is beyond the scope of this article.

  8. After you enter a drive letter for your striped volume, click Next.

  9. Click Format this partition with the following settings, and then follow these steps:

    1. Enter the file system type.

      Note that FAT32 or NTFS is acceptable.

    2. Leave the default selection in the Allocation Unit Size box.

    3. In the Volume Label box, you can keep the default New Volume label or you can type you own label.

    4. At this time, you can click to select the Quick Format and File and Folder Compression check boxes. Or you can defer both of these tasks if you want.

  10. Click Next, check your selection in the Summary window, and then click Finish.

The striped volumes are displayed on the two disks on your system. They have the same color code, the same drive letter (if you mapped the drive during the procedure), and they're both the same size.

Troubleshooting

  • Don't mix hardware RAID 0 with software RAID 0.
  • A striped volume can't hold the system or boot partition of a Windows Server 2003-based system.
  • You can't extend or mirror striped volumes.
  • There's no fault tolerance on a striped volume. This means that if one of the disks becomes damaged or no longer functions properly, the whole volume is lost.

Hardware RAID uses a RAID card to connect drives with computer. The RAID controller on the card combines drives into a virtual volume. Besides, hardware RAID also includes special I/O processing chip and array buffer. These devices make hardware RAID have best performance. But generally speaking, hardware RAID is expensive and is usually applied in servers.

Hardware assisted RAID needs a RAID card and drivers provided by manufacturers. However, Hardware assisted RAID lacks special I/O processing chip, so it will occupy the resources of CPU. This RAID will also provide fault-tolerance and improve performance. Besides, this RAID is only suitable for RAID 0 and RAID 1.

Software RAID combines multiple drives into a logical volume through Disk Management feature provided by operating system. Software RAID can also provide data redundancy. However, it will reduce the performance of disk subsystem by 30%.

How to create software RAID on Windows 10? Here is a tutorial.

Step 1: Press 'Windows + R' keys and type 'diskmgmt.msc' in run box to open Disk Management.

Step 2: Create a RAID.

  • Right click the whole disk to convert it from basic disk to dynamic disk.
  • Right click unallocated space and choose 'New x Volume'('X' can be 'Striped', 'Mirrored', or 'RAID-5').
Tip: New Simple Volume option will just create a partition if the disk is not a dynamic disk. Spanned volume is not a kind of RAID. Other New X Volume options will convert basic disk to dynamic disk automatically after clicking Yes in the pop-up warning window to continue the RAID creating process.
  • Follow the wizard to select disks, and set volume size, drive letter, file system, and cluster size.

Common RAID Levels

Windows 10 Raid 1 Setup

The common RAID levels include the following: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10/01.

RAID 0 is also called striped volume. It combines at least two drives into a big volume. It not only increases the capacity of disk, but also improves its performance by dispersing continuous data into multiple drives for access.

The dispersal of continuous data I/O requests improves the performance by making every disk deal with the part of data requests allocated to it in parallel so as to fully utilize the Throughput of Bus. However, it can't provide data redundancy. Hence, its data reliability is the lowest one.

RAID 1 is also called mirrored volume. It also needs at least two drives (usually an even number). It realizes data redundancy through making a disk back up the data on another disk, which sequentially causes situation that the usable space is only a half of the disk array.

Besides, it can also improve the reading performance because it can read data from the backup drive when the original drive is busy. However, the writing speed is slowed down because the backup and error verification.

RAID 10/01 is also called RAID 1+0 or RAID 0+1. It is a combination of RAID 0 and RAID 1 and needs at least four drives. It can not only read/write data on multiple drives in parallel to improve access speed, but also provide data redundancy by making backup of each original drive.

However, it also only uses a half space of disk array. Besides, it will also cause higher CPU usage.

RAID 5 needs at least three drives. It will access data and parity check information crosswise on all drives. The reading speed of RAID 5 approaches that of RAID 0 because the I/O requests can also be simultaneously responded by all drives except that RAID 5 has extra parity check information that occupy a disk.

However, the writing speed of RAID 5 is slower than that of a single disk because RAID 5 will read old data and write extra parity check information when writing data (so called write performance impairments).

About Windows 10 Storage Spaces

Storage Spaces is a Windows built-in technology. Users can utilize this technology to group multiple drives together into a storage pool and then use the capacity of the pool to create virtual drives named storage spaces. This technology can help users to protect their data from drive failure through mirroring data and extend storage space through adding drivers to PC.

How to use Windows 10 storage spaces? Here is a tutorial.

Step 1: Create a storage pool.

  • Type 'manage storage spaces' in Windows search box.
  • Click Manage Storage Spaces button to open it.
  • Click 'Create a new pool and storage space'.
Note: When users create a storage pool with formatted drives, data loss will occur. Please back up data in advance, or prepare for data recovery.

Step 2: Create storage space.

  • Choose file system: NTFS or ReFS.
  • Choose resiliency type: Simple (no resiliency), Two-way mirror, Three-way mirror, or Parity.

Attention:

ReFS (Resilient File System): It is compatible with most of NTFS. It can verify data corruption automatically and try to recover it. Besides, the combination of ReFS and Windows 10 Storage Spaces can provide better data protection. At the same time, there are performance improvements in dealing with hundreds of millions of files.

Simple (no resiliency): This type needs at least one drive and will write one copy of data. So, it won't protect data from drive failure (click to know how to recover data from a failed hard drive). However, similar to RAID 0, it can improve read/write performance through adding drives.

Two-way mirror: It needs at least two drives and will write two copies of data and it will protect data from a single drive failure. It is similar to RAID 1.

Three-way mirror: It needs at least five drives and will write three copies of data. The usable space is a third of the total capacity. But it will protect data from two simultaneous drive failures.

Parity: It needs at least three drives and writes data with parity information. It will protect data from a single drive failure. It is similar to RAID 5.

Windows 10 Storage Spaces vs. RAID

Actually, Windows 10 storage spaces feature can also realize software RAID to some extent. However, the Windows Storage Spaces has some difference from RAID and we can't say that it is inferior to RAID. Let's see the difference of Windows 10 Storage Spaces vs. RAID.

Sockets

Generally speaking, RAID has socket limitation except for software RAID. The number of sockets is determined by physical RAID controller. However, Windows 10 Storage Spaces and software RAID don't have this limitation.

Management

Generally speaking, operating system treats RAID as one disk. So, if the disks in hardware RAID have different capacities, space wasting will occur. However, Windows 10 Storage Spaces will not cause this waste because operating system can still operate single drive.

Besides, Windows 10 Storage Spaces has ReFS, which can make users free from trouble of data verification.

Performance

As for read write speed performance, many people have tested. They find that the sequential reading/writing speed of RAID 0 is approximately twice that of Storage Spaces simple mode. However, their 4K reading/writing speeds are almost the same.

Besides, the sequential reading speed of RAID 1 is slightly faster than that of Storage Spaces two-way mirror mode. But the sequential writing speed of RAID 1 is approximately half that of Storage Spaces two-way mirror mode. Their 4K reading/writing speeds are almost the same.

However, reading/writing speed in the Storage Spaces parity mode will be much slower than that in hardware RAID 5.

But Windows Storage Spaces still have its advantages like no fee and data protection. Users can try it. And if users are using SSD, Storage Spaces are recommended.

How to Back up Data and Manage Partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard

  • Align partitions to 1 MB: It is 4K alignment, which is recommended for improving computer performance.
  • Use GUID partition table for the target disk: MBR can only recognize and use 2TB disk space at most. This option can convert MBR to GPT, thus users can use the disk space beyond 2 TB. This feature is not free.
  • Disk Layout and Change Selected Partition: These two boxes are used together. Users click a partition in the Layout box, and then they can resize this partition in the Change Selected Partition box by dragging arrows or typing partition size value.

Step 5: A note window pops up. Read it and click Finish.

If the copied disk is a system disk, users can set firmware to boot from the target disk. If the copied disk is just a data disk, users can ignore this note and click Finish.

Step 6: Click Apply button to execute the pending operations.
